Our seahorses are bred and raised by Draco Marine Aquaculture at the University of Maryland's Center of Marine Biotechnology in Downtown Baltimore at the National Aquarium site.

Other Seahorses you see sold in the U.S. are not raised in the U.S., they are imported and are stressed from long transit times of up to 10 days. Often those seahorses are very weak and thin due to prepacking starvation prior to their long journey to the U.S.

seahorse pairsPurchasing your seahorses from our facility gives you many benefits. Virtually no shipping stress since our breeder is 1 1/2 hours from our facility which allows us close inspection of the breeding facility - assuring quality breeding practices. Maryland raised and hand selected by Dr. Mac provides Seahorses that are fat and happy – not stressed!

seahorse fedThese seahorses are all healthy and hardy animals that eat frozen Mysis shrimp readily. A pair of seahorses will do well in a small nano tank or even in a larger reef tank, however they are slow predatory type feeders and will not do well with other fish in the same tank. They generally do not bother corals or any other reef animals and as long as they are fed twice a day with frozen mysis they will do well in most reef systems or any nano tank. An average seahorse will eat approx. 6-8 Mysis at a feeding and should be fed twice a daalgae laby. Frozen brine shrimp may ocassionally be fed, but they are of very poor nutritional value and absolutely should not be a major part of the diet for these seahorses, they are raised on Mysis and should be fed that food exclusively!

The Hippocampus reidi and Hippocampus erectus seahorses we sell take about 5 months to grow to their 4 inch size and if fed well may reach a size of about 7-8 inches within two years.

seahorse with appendagesA special type of H. erectus seahorses have very bizarre appendages growing from their heads, this is a special trait that is selected for when bred and mostly the females exhibit this desirable unique feature. These are very interesting animals to say the least!!

Seahorses are fascinating animals that are a real joy to watch as they interact with each other. We hope you enjoy the benefits of these unique animals that have been lovingly raised in captivity. We do not recommend mixing these seahorses with wild collected seahorses and strongly discourage the sale of wild collected seahorses. Wild collected seahorses are very difficult animals to keep in captivity and almost always die due to starvation, please do not buy wild collected seahorses---leave them in the ocean where they belong and thrive!!!

Colors vary with each individual and may change, some are brighter colored than others. At times some red seahorses may be yellow and at other times red, colors vary with surroundings and from other factors as well.
