The Inspiration Behind The Pieces of The Reef
Dr. Mac recently traveled to the Solomon Islands in April to help set up our sponsored coral farmers in Marau, an isolated area on the eastern side of the island of Guadalcanal. During his trip Dr. Mac observed, photographed, and collected corals for our propagation efforts on many reefs.
The spectacular formations of corals on the reefs of the Solomon Islands were an amazing sight with all the colors and varieties of shapes growing together. This served as an inspiration for an idea about bringing this beauty home to the reef aquarium hobbyist. When Dr. Mac returned from his trip he worked to recreate these coral formations with cultured corals grown in our greenhouse, we call these formations of assorted corals mounted on cured live rock Pieces of the Reef.
Below are some photos of coral reef formations on the reefs of the Solomon Islands, the inspiration for Pieces of the Reef. You can see Acropora colonies growing in clusters of Leather corals, an assortment of many different types of corals growing in clusters, and assorted Montipora all growing together.
We hope you will find our cultured Pieces of the Reef as inspirational as the natural reef structures in the Solomons so that you can build the reef aquarium of your dreams.
